Hidden Grapes: Finding Purpose in Secluded Seasons

DAY 3 OF 3

Day 3: Veraison – A Time to Change

When you bear (produce) much fruit, My Father is honored and glorified and you show and prove yourselves to be true followers of Mine. John 15:8 Amplified Bible

Two years had passed since my husband and I moved, and I was still waiting for the revelation of my calling. I had grudgingly accepted God's pruning process; I even welcomed the removal of my controlling nature and prideful spirit. With no end in sight, frustration set in. I started grumbling and questioning whether God had a greater purpose for me or if I was destined to remain tucked behind my work-from-home laptop, unseen and unfulfilled. Amid my impatience and doubt, God used a cluster of grapes found at a nearby vineyard to inform me that He still had a plan.

The palette of colors was not what I was accustomed to in a grape, which is why the cluster caught my attention during an evening stroll. The bunch possessed hues of pink, yellow, and blue. Its uniqueness had me wondering whether the cluster was of a rare grape variety or if the vine was distressed. Neither assumption was accurate. The grapes were changing; they were almost ready for harvest.

The natural progression in which grapes transition from growth to ripening is known as veraison, a French word meaning “change of color of the grape berries.” During veraison, energy is focused on the vine; grape growth stalls but sugar content rises, which is vital in winemaking. With the vine’s help, grapes reach their fullest potential and are then ushered into their destiny at the precise moment.

Witnessing the change in that beautiful bunch of grapes helped me to understand my own transformative journey. God is faithful to equip those He calls according to His will (Hebrews 13:21). But just like a young grapevine, we do not bear fruit the moment seeds are planted. The Vinedresser must nurture us; we must bond with the Vine. We become resilient during the painful pruning season and must experience change before harvest.

Observing the rhythms of the vineyard while in a season of isolation was a part of God’s intricate plan for my development. As I emerge from this season, I do so with a deeper understanding of the Vinedresser’s love, perfect timing, and a renewed readiness for all He has called me to do. Today’s scripture teaches that a life abundantly filled with good works and spiritual growth not only proves the genuineness of one’s faith but also brings glory to God.

In reflection, consider the season you are in. Are you in a period of growth, pruning, or veraison? Be encouraged to embrace whatever stage, knowing the Vinedresser is at work, preparing you for a purpose greater than you could ever imagine.

Day 2

About this Plan

Hidden Grapes: Finding Purpose in Secluded Seasons

A vinedresser is someone who nurtures, balances, and cultivates grapevines. They oversee every aspect of the vineyard, from planting and pruning to harvesting. There is no wonder Jesus employs the vineyard metaphor to portray the bond between God, Jesus, and believers. Over the next three days, we will explore how vineyards and seasons of seclusion can draw us closer to God's plan for our lives.
