Let’s Go: A 5-Day Family DevotionalSample
God Keeps His Promises
Has anyone ever broken a promise to you? It doesn’t feel very good, does it? And it can be hard to move forward in a relationship with someone after they’ve broken a promise. But there is someone who has never nor will ever break a promise. God! You can read about God’s promises to His people all throughout the Bible, and He never—not ever—breaks one.
One example of a big promise God made is to a man named Abraham. We’ll get to that, but first let’s back up a bit. Earlier in Abraham’s story when he was named Abram . . . wait, what? (Yes, people’s names change, or they go by different names, in the Bible a lot.) Anyway, God told Abram to move to a new land, away from his friends and family, to a place where he probably didn’t know anyone. And it wasn’t like today, when we have phones and video chats. Abram might have felt weary and unsure, but he still did what God asked.
Okay, now back to Abram/Abraham’s promise. After Abraham moved and settled in a land called Canaan, God told Abraham that an entire nation would come from him—and this nation would have God’s blessing! Maybe this wouldn’t seem that hard to believe, but Abraham and his wife, Sarah, didn’t have any kids. Plus, they were already super old. Sarah was not only old enough to be a grandma, but she could have been a great-great grandma! Despite the odds, Sarah miraculously got pregnant, and she and Abraham had a baby boy. And the coolest thing is that eventually, God’s Son, Jesus, was born into Abraham’s family line!
Remember, God is inviting you into His story too. If you’re feeling weary, you can remind yourself of God’s promise to always be there for you. God also promises to strengthen His people. When we are weak, He is strong. Is there something God might be asking you to do through His strength today?
