“Do It as Worship”
It was a powerful dream. There were two groups of people worshipping and glorifying God. The first group worshipped in the exact same way—almost robotic. They all stood in a line doing the same move over and over with their hands. They looked to be performing instead of worshipping freely.
The second group worshipped with abandon. Some sang, some cried, some danced, some spoke in foreign tongues. Even in a dreamlike state, I could sense the sincerity in their hearts.
When I awoke, I had tears in my eyes. I didn’t understand fully, but that dream had touched me. As I sat there in my bed, I began to connect the dots of what I had dreamed. I knew the dream was showing me that true and honest worship comes from the heart.
During my quiet time, I read Ephesians 2:10, which reminded me that we are God’s handiwork and created for good works. While studying the passage more, I learned that the word handiwork comes from the Greek word poiema, which translates to “something made.” Poiema is also the root of the English words poem and poetry. I sat and thought of us each being a piece of the poetry that God made, each person a unique word, adding something different to build a beautiful poem.
God loves to work in different ways in different people. When we honor the way in which we were created and sincerely show that in what we do or make, we get a chance to reflect the diversity of who God is. Having a heart to glorify Him through our creativity allows us to authentically show up as ourselves in sincere worship.
In your creative work, remember this command: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23).
As you honor God in your creative gifts, ask Him in prayer how He desires you to do it. Be open to the response and the unique ways in which God gave you to honor and glorify Him with what has been placed within you.
