Week 1: The Unexpected KingSample
For over 700 years, the children of Israel had waited in anticipation for their Savior, their Messiah, who would come to deliver them from their oppressors. Yet, although they expected a conquering warrior-king, God chose to step into humanity in the most vulnerable form: a baby in a manger, surrounded by shepherds who bowed in worship.
Jesus didn’t come in pomp and grandeur like kings of this world; instead, the Savior set the tone of the Gospel by coming in humility for the sake of anyone who would choose to believe in him. He stepped out of the eternal glory of heaven to be raised by poor parents in a town that “nothing good could come from”, and he did it all for us.
As you read today’s verses, allow yourself to get lost in the wonder of this truth: the King of the universe placed himself in the lowest of lows so you could know him, and be known by him.
