The Fruit of Hope: Discovering Hope in the Fruits of the SpiritSample
What comes to mind when you think of gentleness? Chances are its images of peace. Relaxed seashores and pleasant meadows. The sun setting behind a mountaintop or a campfire under a field of blazing stars.
Our souls respond to the gentle in the world because they’re often starved for the fruit of gentleness. There isn’t much gentleness to be found these days among the chaos and harshness of life in this world.
Hope looks at all that chaos and says, “No, it doesn’t have to be this way.”
Hope responds with rest and gentleness, believing that such things can exist in a world that has no use for them.
Jesus indicates this in the Gospel of Matthew where he tell us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29, NRSV)
Jesus is the gentle one who cares for you, who gives you rest when we need it; when you respond to his gentle requests, you are able to give out gentleness in your own life. When you act in gentleness to carry another’s burdens in hope, you’re acting just like Jesus does toward you.
Today, keep your eyes open for ways to spread some gentleness… and spread some hope in the process!
