Matt Maher - All The People Said AmenSample
Great Things
It has always amazed me that I've never heard of there being many songs based on the Magnificent (Song of Mary), known as one of the eight most ancient Christian hymns, that reads:
“And Mary said : "My soul exalts the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. "For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed. "For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name. "AND HIS MERCY IS UPON GENERATION AFTER GENERATION TOWARD THOSE WHO FEAR HIM. "He has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart. "He has brought down rulers from their thrones, And has exalted those who were humble. "HE HAS FILLED THE HUNGRY WITH GOOD THINGS; And sent away the rich empty-handed. "He has given help to Israel His servant, In remembrance of His mercy, As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and his descendants forever." - Luke 1:46-55
It's my observation that in modern worship, we often struggle to find ways to write worship songs from the New Testament. When we think about it, Mary was the first Christian. She was the first person to say "Yes!" to Christ. She not only accepted Him into her heart, but she accepted Him fully, even into her womb! However, I think too often we view Mary's prayer as spectators, instead of entering into it ourselves.
I think this is the same level of acceptance Paul is talking about in Romans 10:8-10, which reads:
"But what does it say? "THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, in your mouth and in your heart" -that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation."
We're not just accepting Jesus as a friend, or lover; we're accepting Him completely into our being. By accepting Him completely into our being, He becomes part of us in all ways, and we are changed. Mary's prayer is of the kind that we all should pray!
