Walking in Wonder - Draw Near to God as You Navigate Your Child's Second Year of Life

DAY 4 OF 5

Our God Who Taught Us to Walk

Our first son took his good, sweet time before he decided to start walking. The day he really wanted the graham crackers on the other side of the room, well, that was the day he finally walked. Eight years later, I watched him teach his youngest brother (at the time) to walk, bent over him in love, his other brothers cheering every step. There is something so deeply exhilarating and bonding about being part of this milestone. We cheer, catch, coax, and cajole, and yet it is an unseen labor of love that our children will not remember one day.

Do you know God has been at work in your life in ways you can’t even remember? As pastor John Piper wrote, “God is always doing ten thousand things in your life and you are only vaguely aware of three of them.” The point isn’t the numbers (who can know?) but the sentiment. God is always up to much more than we can fathom. This should give us such great comfort. My favorite chapter of the Bible is Hosea 11. In it God details His passionate love for His people. How He loved them from the very beginning, even teaching them to walk, but how they turned from Him. The chapter culminates in how God refuses to give up on them, how He will roar like a lion and how His people will come trembling.

Your God is always working in your life, and in your child’s life, whether you see it, remember it, or even feel it. His work is constant. His passion is a given. What comfort this gives us today!
