Becoming a Good ShepherdSample
Becoming a Good Shepherd: Part IV
In the Bible, the qualities of a good shepherd are similar to six qualities Jim Collins identified as Level 5 Leaders in his book, “Good to Great.” The fourth quality is to develop discipline.
Jim Collins wrote about what he called an “indomitable will” in great leaders. These leaders were extremely disciplined and persevered through any trials in order to obtain their goals.
By developing discipline, we can pursue our goals with passion while persevering through the challenges that arise.
Romans 5:3-4 says, “But we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope.”
No one is ever too thrilled about the promise of tribulations. Testing forges strength and willpower, both important skills for a leader. No one can really know their capabilities if they only ever do what they have always done.
To move from being a good leader to a great one, you must have the strength to walk through the hard times.
There are always trials when we are pursuing our calling. Be disciplined and persevere in times of trouble and you will likely become a good shepherd.
Questions for Reflection
- How do you cultivate perseverance? How do you know when to persevere? When do you need to reassess and possibly change paths? What’s the difference between grit and dogged blindness?
- What is discipline? What does discipline look like in your career field?
