How to Read the Bible

DAY 2 OF 7

Tip #1: Get the Right Tool

I’m cheap, which means I don’t always want to hire a professional to do odd jobs around my house. YouTube often gives me the information I need to get the job done myself.

But I’ve discovered that I need something else: the right tools for the job.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve tried to fix something with the limited tools I have in my toolbox. I always find it easier once I go to the local hardware store and get the right tool for the job.

The same applies to reading the Bible. I’m so glad that Peter, one of the authors of Scripture, wrote that he found some of Paul’s writings in Scripture hard to understand. If you read the Bible, you will find parts of it difficult and confusing, not just occasionally, but regularly!

You need the right tool. If you want to read the Bible and understand it, buy a good study Bible, like the CSB Study Bible. It will have numerous footnotes and references that help explain the text. You can ask your pastor for a recommendation. A good study Bible will help you when you get stuck as you read the Word.

For the price of a cheap dinner for two, you can buy a tool that will help you read and understand Scripture better. You need the right tool for the job.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for providing tools and resources to help me understand the Bible. Help me to use these tools well. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Reflection: Do you have a good study Bible? If not, consider how to get one to help you read and understand the Bible.
