John Chapter 6
Title: Spiritual Sustenance
Scripture: John 6:35
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Thought:
Bread means sustenance. We all need bread to live. In Zimbabwe in 2008, there was a critical shortage of basic commodities like bread. As a university student at the time, I distinctly remember queuing for countless hours outside a nearby shop whenever they were rumoured to be baking a fresh batch of bread. I also recall the overwhelming joy I felt when I got to walk back to my residence with a steaming fresh loaf of bread in my hands. (Sweet success!)
Physical bread and our physical needs can consume most of our waking time and lives. Often, these needs feel so urgent and pressing. In this passage of scripture, Jesus is reminding us to shift our focus – that He offers a different kind of bread. The sustenance we really need to keep going, to push past obstacles and challenges, to face another day, to pursue excellence in our workplaces and areas of calling, to keep loving and encouraging others, to keep striving towards the destiny and purpose He has lovingly laid out for us – this sustenance is not found in ordinary bread, but rather in feeding on God’s word, leaning on His infallible promises and seeking His divine wisdom.
But since our human condition is wired to fulfil physical needs naturally, how do we get to a place where the cravings of the spirit are fulfilled and take precedence? Today, I pray that God would fill us with a greater longing and desire for His living bread. If I could queue for countless hours for physical bread, how much more could I be doing to gain His bread, which is freely given, accessible at all times, and brings unimaginable joy and satisfaction?
Application:
Reflect on how you can shift your focus from fulfilling physical needs to seeking spiritual sustenance. What else can you do to ‘feed’ upon God’s Word today? Allow the living bread that Jesus offers to fill and sustain you through life’s challenges.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for being the Bread of Life. Help us to shift our focus from the urgent physical needs to the spiritual sustenance You offer. Fill us with a greater longing for Your living bread and guide us to seek You daily. Amen.

About this Plan
At the beginning of Genesis 1, God spoke the word, “Let there be light,” and it overcame darkness. In Jesus, God sent the Word, Jesus, and He overcame the darkness helping us see God’s good plan for our lives. By reading one chapter from John’s gospel each day, with the accompanying devotion, you’ll see God’s nature in Jesus, God’s work through Jesus, and God’s plan for all to know Jesus.
