MORE THAN CONQUERORS

DAY 2 OF 5

DAY 2 – The Power of the Word

Scripture:

John 1:1-5 NIV - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Matthew 4:1-4 NIV - Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’

Devotional:

I’m sure you can remember a time when you were immersed in a book. Maybe a book so good that you read it cover to cover within days. Our generation has been captivated by great stories written on pages, edited, published, shipped to bookstores, and bought with our wallets. The Hunger Games book series has enough power to shape our imaginations and get us hooked all the way through. We are in love with the characters and the storyline and are taken right into that arena. It has power!

However, the more I read the Holy Bible, the more I realize the power that is held within its covers. But it’s a different kind of power.

The Bible is more than a storybook, more than a textbook, and way more than just a very old book. It is the written Word of God! The Bible not only holds the power to tap into our imagination, but it also has the power to change our eternity.

From cover to cover, Genesis to Revelation, the Bible tells the story of God’s relationship with His creation, which is us! In Genesis, we see the fall of man, which is God’s creation creating distance between us and God! The rest of the Bible is all about God’s redemptive plan to bring us back into communion with Him. God’s plan was to send His son Jesus into the world to become the reconciliation for our sins.

The opening of John 1 paints a picture of the Word of God being Jesus Christ, who is God and has been around since the beginning of time! The Word of God has power because Jesus is the Word of God made flesh. Everything you read in your Bible points to the personhood of Jesus Christ.

Paul writes in 2 Timothy that the Word of God is inspired by the Holy Spirit and is useful for Christian living. Also, Jesus says in Mathew 4:4 that the Word of God sustains our lives more than food does! We should be reading from God’s Word daily as it satisfies all of our needs.

The Word of God has the power to sustain us, satisfy our needs, and is filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. It points to Jesus as our Savior, in whom we find eternal life. The Word of God not only has the power to run our imaginations wild, but it holds the power to change our eternity.

REFLECT:

·How often do you read the Bible? Do you read other books over reading the Word of God?

·How do you view the Bible? Do you view it as a storybook or as the written living Word of God?

·How do you like to read the Bible? Do you take notes, highlight verses, or speak to friends about the passages you read?

PRAYER:

Dear God, we are very thankful for your Word and how it sustains us. May we be reminded of the power of your Word and the revelation of Christ through the Holy Bible. As we dive into the power of your Word, we pray that we would know You more, God, and that our lives would be transformed for Your glory. Amen.
