DAY 11 OF 40

“It is not by reading the Scriptures in the original languages or in some contemporary version that makes us better Christians. Rather, it is getting on our knees with the Scriptures spread before us, and allowing the Spirit of God to break our hearts.” A.W. Tozer

Read 1 John 2:15.

A big part of being holy is thinking rightly about the world. We need to see the world through God’s lens. Many Christians hate the world because they believe God hates it. There are attributes of the world that God hates due to their sinful nature. However, God’s creative elements are still sound, just as they were in the book of Genesis. God loves His design.

It’s essential to understand the goodness of God’s creation because otherwise, we will start becoming highly legalistic when practicing Christianity. We will make crazy rules that make the Ten Commandments look like child’s play. We’ll misapply Old Testament laws to our lives because of our narrow scope of understanding Old Testament laws. We may even slap the name of Jesus on a rule that is not, in fact, of Jesus.

In the beginning, God welcomed someone into His garden. God knew Adam would sin. God knew one day He would have to banish them. However, God gave Adam and Eve insider access to the garden. We all begin our lives outside of the garden. Life without God is life outside of the garden covenant. However, this does not seem to throw God off at all. When we accept Jesus as our Lord, God will take the mess and welcome us into the garden. He can redesign your baggage, sin, and vulgarity to His standards. We don’t have to become perfect before we receive access. A relationship with Jesus gives us free access to the garden. Now, the work of becoming more like Christ can begin.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  1. What are some ways you narrow the scope of your understanding of God?
  2. We know that the Word of God gives us unlimited access to Him. How much time (if any) do you spend in His Word daily?
  3. Would your relationship with Him improve if you increased time in the Word? If so, what are some things hindering your Bible reading?

About this Plan

Uncommon

The purpose of this devotional is to take a deeper look into the "uncommon" living for those of us walking with Jesus. We are declared holy through Christ, so how do we walk in that holiness? How can we be set apart and walk out our holiness?
