Words for Worship: 7 Days to Bringing God Your Best PraiseSample
HALAL
In the Bible, seven Hebrew words translate as 'worship' in English. Today, we're examining the word HALAL.
HALAL means 'to rave and boast about the goodness of God.'
The word HALAL appears in Scripture 165x, the second most of any word of the seven words for worship. This seems surprising to our modern interpretation of Scripture because it's safe to say that the specific action, to 'HALAL', is relatively uncommon in modern worship expression.
Picture yourself at a wedding reception. Everyone is on the dance floor getting after it. Young or old, male or female, it doesn't matter. In these moments of celebration, people will break loose in a way that would normally cause severe embarrassment under any other circumstances. People are clamorously foolish, raving joyfully, going hard out of celebration.
The perfect illustration of HALAL in scripture is in 2 Samuel 6:14 when David worships God so hard that his clothes literally fall off. He declares that God is so good 'he would even become more undignified than this.'
HALAL: A praise that may make you look foolish but is everything but foolish in the eyes of the God you're praising.
Thank you for coming on the journey! I pray you are leaving stronger and closer to Jesus than you came.
Much love,
Levi
