BigStuf Quiet Time Devotional: How to See GodSample
How to See God. Is that even possible? I mean . . . let’s be honest. God is invisible, right?
It’s not like you’re going to run into God at the gas station waiting to buy Hot CHEETOS and an energy drink.
Maybe you’ve prayed for some kind of miracle or a sign, a message from God and then you just got . . . silence.
Or maybe, like a lot of humans, it’s kind of hard for you to believe in Someone you can’t call, text, or see on FaceTime.
If that’s you, by the way, there’s no judgment here. You’re in good company. Every speaker. Every band member. Every adult from your church who has been following God forever. . we all feel it. Humans have been trying to figure out how to see God with our own eyes since the beginning. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the way God normally operated.
That is until Jesus showed up.
One of the earliest Christian leaders, the apostle Paul, said it this way:
Christ is the visible image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15a NLT, emphasis added).
Paul believed Jesus showed the world exactly what God is like. He may have gotten that idea from Jesus Himself—who told His friend, Philip: “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9 NIV).
For thousands of years, humanity had wondered what God was really like and wondered how to see God. Then, suddenly, it was no longer impossible.
Want to know what God would say or do? Look at Jesus.
This week at BigStuf, that’s exactly what we’re going to do. We’re going to take time in Sessions, Small Groups, and Quiet Times to look at Jesus and learn what God is like. As we do, there’s a good chance you’ll see God at work in some really incredible ways.
With that in mind: What do you wish you knew about God?
Okay, so what if you could see what God is really like this week? How would it change the way you think about God every day?
And what if you don’t see God in that specific way this week? What if you don’t get an answer to your specific question? Is it still possible that God is at work all around you? And are you open to seeing it?
BigStuf is a great opportunity to focus on looking for God around you—fewer distractions, more focus, and plenty of opportunities to discover more about Jesus by listening to what He said and did. So . . .
Are you open to looking for God this week?
Yes
No
Maybe? I don’t know.
Reflect
What five words describe what you think God is like?
Pray
As you take time to pray, begin by taking a few deep breaths and let your mind focus on God.
Today, pray about how you want to see God clearly at BigStuf this week. Ask God for help paying attention to how God is working in your life, your group, and the world around you this week.
As you close your time of prayer, say something like this:
God, this week, I’m going to look for You all around me. As we talk about finding our home in You, please show me what You’re like. As I learn more about Jesus, please make it clear to me what You’re like and what You think about me. Amen.
