Single and Not Sorry: Devotions of Real Encouragement for Right NowSample
Your Body Is Not a Problem
God created man in His own image; He created Him in the image of God; He created them male and female... God saw all that He had made, and it was very good indeed.
GENESIS 1:27, 31 CSB
When you’re absorbed in your feelings about your singleness, it can be tempting to look within to find blame or reason, and it’s often natural to turn your focus on your body. Once you hyperfocus on parts of your body that you perceive as flaws or problem areas, you may soon get the idea that changing your body will change your relationship status. Most of us have been there at one time or another. We diet, we push our limits physically, and we strive to have that perfect look. The idea that your appearance is linked to your singleness feels logical when you’re in this mindset. The truth, however, is not so simple. Your body is not a problem to be solved or an issue to be fixed. The way your body looks does not dictate your relationship status.
Our passage today reminds us that we are made in the image of God. We know that God is good (see Exodus 34:6), and therefore His creation is good. Your body is not a problem because your body was created by a good God. And not only that, when He created you, He was proud of His creation. If you feel as though your appearance or certain aspects of your body are the reason you are single, remember that you are the imago Dei. Imago Dei is a Latin term meaning “image of God.” It serves as a good reminder that in everything we do, we are image-bearers of God. You are the imago Dei.
If anyone has ever told you that they couldn’t be with you because of your body, that was not from God. Of course, we need to care for our bodies, but as today’s passage explains, our bodies are already good because they were created by Him. Your body is not a problem to be fixed but a beautiful part of God’s creation.
Right Now Reminder:
You were made in God’s image, and your body is good. Your body does not need to be morphed, altered, or changed in any way for you to be loved.
