Sling It!Sample
Bring it....and I'll Sling it!
Several years ago, I found myself in an impossible looking situation. A gigantic obstacle stood in the way of me being able to see a dream fulfilled. I wrote a devotional book throughout this challenge, and one of the biblical characters I focused on was David, the shepherd boy, in his battle against the giant Goliath. It’s a story from the Old Testament, but this ancient tale contains so much wisdom that continues to be applicable through the giant-sized problems we come up against in our lives today.
It may well be that in some area of your life, you feel as small and insignificant as David would have looked as he stood and faced Goliath. You feel like a tiny, ill-equipped person against a big, giant-sized problem. Navigating this challenge is leaving you feeling weak and overwhelmed.
Examples of such situations in life could be:
Little you vs a big, powerful (and mean) boss at work.
Little you vs big challenges with your children.
Little in your bank account vs big bills you need to pay.
Little willpower and big addiction problems.
Little health and strength vs a big health challenge.
Little hope in your heart vs big heavy depression in your mind.
These are just a few examples of the kind of giant-sized problems you may find yourself up against.
Pause to consider what your giant issue currently is. What struggle are you up against that is making you feel small, weak, powerless, and like there’s no hope or resolution?
Please consider that specific situation as we think about facing our giants together over the next few days.
David, the shepherd boy, defeated Goliath the giant with a simple sling and stones. This weapon may seem unimpressive, especially in the face of a ‘battle-ready beefcake’ like Goliath - but the humble sling did more than do the job! I’ve created a modern-day ‘sling’ to help us in our giant-sized battles. It's an acronym for the word sling, where each letter of that word holds a different strategy to help us build strength as we face the big battles in our lives. It focuses on us growing in emotional, spiritual and mental strength to help us face our giants more effectively and with increased resilience. Let’s examine these five strategies together over the coming days and get ready to say with confidence to our giants, ‘Bring it….and I’ll sling it!’
