Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year OneSample
For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted (Luke 14:11).
Are you a proud or humble servant of the Lord?
We are introduced to a humble Saul. He doesn’t boast to his uncle that he is chosen king when his uncle inquires about his time with Samuel (1 Samuel 10:16). Next, he is found hiding when the Lord reveals to the people that he is Israel’s king (1 Samuel 10:21-23). The humility quickly turns to hubris. Saul disobeys the command of Samuel and offers a sacrifice that he is not qualified to give (1 Samuel 13:9). Samuel rebukes him, saying, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God” (1 Samuel 13:13). Later he disobeys again by not obliterating the Amalekites (1 Samuel 15). Subsequently, the wise Samuel exposes Saul’s fatal flaw by pointing out to the king “when you were little in your own eyes” (1 Samuel 15:17).
Employment Point: Serve God humbly now for future exaltation.
