Creation

DAY 7 OF 7

Day 7: Adding holy to the wonderful

I love how simple and accurate the scriptures are in describing God in creation. After six days of work, ‘everything in [the heavens and earth] was completed.' ‘Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good’ (Genesis 1:31).

Can we stop there and think about that for a minute? All the good, wonderful, spectacular, awesome, and beneficial things of creation we see around us are the direct result of divine intelligence and the kindness of God. God’s original intent was ‘that it was very good.'

So what did God do when creation was complete? He rested. He ceased working; He ceased creating. When I read this, I think ‘what a perfect creation that adds the gift and example of rest at the end.'

So what is rest in the context of creation? Firstly, it means everything is covered, all is complete, all the macro interstellar stuff right down to the sub-atomic particles. There’s no need to sweat that something is missing. Secondly, rest is important because it allows an opportunity to stop and appreciate what has been made. Thirdly, it adds a final spiritual element to creation. It adds the holy to the wonderful.

Here’s a challenge for us to consider – to live with the wonder of creation whilst discovering, enjoying and honouring God by entering into His rest (Hebrews 4:10 NLT).
