The Belt of Truth Protects You

The belt described in Ephesians 6:14, the kind worn by a Roman soldier, would have been eight to twelve inches long and made of thick leather. It covered much of a soldier’s torso, offering not only protection but security and stability. It was the first piece of armor to be put on and held many of the others together.

When we’re fighting a battle, our defense starts with truth. We can pause and ask, “What lies are coming at me right now?” Then we can ask, “What is the truth God wants to speak to me today instead?”

You might hear lies about who you are that sound like, “You’re not really loved.” You may hear lies about God like, “He’s forgotten you.” You could hear lies about your purpose such as, “God can never use you now.”

Pause and recognize that all of those lies are weapons intended to wound you. But God gives you truth to guard against those attacks.

No matter how it may feel right now, you are loved. He has not forgotten you. He has an eternal purpose for you beyond any mistake you’ve made.

The belt of a Roman soldier wasn’t narrow like most modern belts. It would have been wide enough to cover part of “the bowels.” This area of the body was associated with emotions in the ancient world. Truth can help guard our emotions by reminding us of what is real, no matter how we feel.

Lies wound; truth defends.

Lies injure; truth protects.

Lies weaken; truth strengthens.

Let’s put on the belt of truth and stand firm in what God says today.

God, today I choose to put on the belt of truth. I will believe what you say. I will stand firm. Amen.
