At the Feet of Jesus

DAY 1 OF 3

Many times we seek God's direction through the reading of His Word. However, we must ask ourselves a key question: Am I offering my time to God in absolute concentration? Luke reveals to us that Mary was «seated at the Lord's feet». Interestingly, this is the same image we have of the apostle Paul sitting at the feet of Gamaliel (Acts 22:3). The idea that the author Luke wants to convey is that in the same way that a disciple sits at the feet of his master to dedicate all his time to him without distractions, Mary had become a faithful and attentive pupil of Jesus. In fact, we could say that Mary approached Jesus, the source of grace, in the same way that the author of Hebrews commands us: «Therefore let’s approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace for help at the time of our need» (Heb. 4:16).

Now, not only did she was seated at the Lord's feet, but she also «listening to His word». This phrase does not refer to Mary being close enough to hear Jesus' voice. The word "listening" is the Greek word "akouo" (from this word comes the word "acoustic") and it means: To understand; to heed; to follow; to agree; to obey. In other words, Mary was listening carefully, believing and obeying the words that Jesus was pronouncing. She took advantage of the presence of the great Master to sit at his feet to approach him in humility and obey him.

Mary was not only a hearer of Christ, but a doer of His words of eternal life. For this reason, Jesus saw Mary in the same way he had previously said he saw those who sat and listened to him: "My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it" (Lk. 8:21). The parable of the Good Samaritan could be called a "call to action," but Mary's action could be called a "call to listen to the Teacher of teachers".

About this Plan

At the Feet of Jesus

Jesus, when speaking about the work of Mary of Bethany, said that «wherever the gospel is preached in the entire world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her» (Mark 14:9). Therefore, Mary of Bethany is a character worthy of study and imitation, because she shows us the fruits of sitting at the feet of our Lord and Savior: Jesus.
