Appeal to God’s loving heart
“In you the orphan finds mercy.” (Hosea 14:3)
This is a compelling reason to let go of all other sources of confidence and place our trust solely in the Lord. When a child loses their natural protector, our God steps in as his guardian; similarly, when people have lost every other source of support, they can throw themselves upon the living God and discover that He is everything they need. Orphans are entrusted to the fatherhood of God, and He faithfully provides for them. The author of these words has experienced firsthand what it means to cling to God, and he gladly testifies that no trust is as well-founded by evidence or as certain to be rewarded with outcomes as trust in the unseen but ever-present God.
Some children may have fathers who don't significantly improve their lives, but those who are fatherless yet have God are truly wealthy. It's better to have God without any other friend than to possess all the patrons of the earth without God. While losing earthly support is painful, as long as the Lord remains the source of mercy for us, we are not genuinely orphaned. Let those who are fatherless echo the prayer of grace, and let all who have lost visible sources of support do the same: “Lord, let me find mercy in You! The more needy and helpless I am, the more confidently I appeal to Your loving heart.”
