Dig Up Your Talents: A Biblical Reflection on Matthew 25Sample

Day One | It is time for you to dig up your talents!

In the book of Matthew 25, Jesus shares a parable known as The Parable of the Talents. In this passage, the Master was preparing for a long journey. He gave the responsibility of his property to three of his servants. The talents were units of money according to the abilities of each servant. The first servant was assigned five talents. The second oversaw two talents. The third servant was given the responsibility over one talent.

While the master was away, the first servant doubled his portion from five talents to ten. The second doubled his portion from two to four talents. The third servant was overwhelmed with fear, did not consult with anyone, and decided to bury the one talent he was given.

When the master returned, he evaluated their stewardship, and he was furious with the servant who decided to bury his talent rather than doubling his single portion like the other servants. The master rebuked the servant, called him “wicked” and “lazy”, and proceeded to take the one talent away, and gave it to the servant who had ten talents.

Consider how this parable is relevant today.

This parable illustrates the importance of using the gifts and resources God has given us for His purposes and the consequences of neglecting or misusing them.

God has uniquely gifted each of us with talents, abilities, and resources. Like the servants in the parable, we are called to steward these gifts wisely and faithfully. Whether our talents are in the form of skills, opportunities, financial resources, or spiritual gifts, God expects us to use them to advance His kingdom and bring Him glory.

Here’s how I see the significance of this clarion call to dig up our talents today.

I have conversations with many high-achieving women leaders who have buried some talents God has given them. Some common reasons women bury their talents are due to 1) belief blockers about themselves or their abilities, 2) practicing habits that do not align with their core values, and 3) making decisions that do not draw them closer to God where they are surrendered and walking in radical obedience.

No matter the justification for the talents being buried, if any of these reasons (or all three) resonate with you, my sister, it is time to dig up your talents.

I invite you to consider how you are stewarding the gifts God has given you.

Take a moment to reflect on the following question:

Are you managing your gifts like the two servants who invested and multiplied their talents, or do you resonate with one who buried his talent out of fear?

Pray this prayer as you sit and reflect in God’s presence:

Lord, I come to You with a heart of thanksgiving for entrusting me with the gifts and abilities You have given me. I repent for the times I have allowed fear, limiting beliefs, unhealthy habits, and decisions to hinder me from using my gifts for Your glory. I ask for Your guidance and direction to faithfully steward the gifts You have given me. Thank You for empowering me with Your Spirit to overcome the obstacles and walk in obedience, multiplying the blessings You have entrusted to me. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
