Approaching Poverty: An 11-Day DevotionalSample

Approaching Poverty: An 11-Day Devotional

DAY 5 OF 11

Why should we help?

Demonstrates our faith & strengthens our relationship with God

Read James 2:15-24

Verse 19 in James 2 is shockingly clear – belief alone does not prove an active or authentic faith. Instead, verse 22 reminds us that works help make our faith active and completes it.

Authentic faith naturally produces compassionate deeds. When we work to help those in poverty, we act as an example of the hands and feet of Jesus. And when our deeds are tied back to our faith, we serve as a living testimony. Not just to those we serve but to all who witness it.

Read Acts 20:35

Giving and serving is just as much about the giver as it is about the receiver. When we serve and give boldly, we are relying on God and taking part in His work and His mission. God allows us to serve others to experience His delight in modeling our lives after Jesus.

Reflection

  1. Think of a time that you witnessed someone serving faithfully. How did it impact you?
  2. Think of a time you were able to serve someone. In what ways did it bless you? In what ways did it bless the person?
  3. How has serving others impacted your relationship with Christ?
