In his office, Alex Haley, the author of "Roots," kept a picture of a turtle sitting on a fence. He said it was to remind him that if he ever started to think "Look what I have achieved," the turtle would remind him that just as it needed help to get on that fence post, so Alex needed help to achieve. Yes, we need each other. That is why the Apostle Paul called believers to realize that and to unite around one consuming purpose: to live a Christ-centered life. Just as humility is the first step in establishing a right relationship with God, so humility is the first step in achieving unity and progress among God's people. Paul points to Jesus Christ as the supreme example of one who truly humbled Himself. "Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave, and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's death on a cross. Therefore God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him a name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." Paul's profile of Jesus shows us the rewarding outcome when we submit ourselves to God and each other.
