Mentoring Lessons- Failures

DAY 3 OF 5

The fellowship of the uncomfortable

Do you and your team only plan what you think can be accomplished?

I hope not! I hope you have enough ambition that you need the Holy Spirit to be present and working to succeed in your plans. If you are comfortable that your team has all that is needed to accomplish your plans, you will miss the joy which comes from living by faith. We are driven to prayer when we can’t accomplish a plan without the moving of the Lord.

I was to fly to a country 13,000 kilometers away. The country didn’t have any ministry serving sports. A friend arranged a meeting with a particular sportsperson. My initial flight was late, and I missed the connection. I called my friend who said he didn’t think the meeting could be rescheduled. What should I do? My plan was to spend one day in the country, have one meeting, and fly home.

Should I still travel 48 hours there and back when the sportsperson I wanted to see wasn’t even available? I took an uncomfortable step and the resulting joy was remarkable. I met someone else who saw the potential of sport.

As the years went by, that one meeting not only birthed sports ministry in that country but in many other nearby countries. Yes, I could have wasted both time and finances. But walking by faith means taking risks and possible failure of “our” plans.

If you don’t include risk in your plans, your faith life will likely be boring compared to the joy and fulfillment that comes when the Lord shows up and you see how He works out the improbable plan. You need to build faith steps into your plan because our natural tendency is to stay comfortable. Comfort leads to a stale and dry faith.

The world of sports has endless opportunities, so include plans that stretch beyond your horizon to increase your faith.

Scripture to ponder –

2 Corinthians 5:7

For we live by faith, not by sight.

Key Lesson: Your role is to walk by faith and let the Father and His Spirit show up as they choose!
