First Things First

DAY 3 OF 3

If you’ve not read this passage from the start of Solomon’s reign over Israel, let me encourage you to read over it now. Here we find just the most inspiring template of how to pray as a leader. As Solomon sets out to rule his people - the Israelites -he’s stepping into an incredible legacy left by his father, David. The people are happy, the nation is strong. Solomon has inherited stockpiles of resources to make sure everything he turns his hand to is a great success.

But when God speaks to him in a dream, what does Solomon ask for? He recognises that all the ‘stuff’ around him, is just that. Stuff. While he could ask for great riches, love and relationships or success in battle, instead he asks for the most humble of gifts. Wisdom in how to lead the people of God. And from that simple prayer came, arguably, the greatest rule and reign the nation had ever seen in their history. With a wise king at the helm, the people and the nation flourished.

In the overflow pattern we’ve discussed, we thrive in life by putting God in his rightful place. Just like Solomon, when our hearts are fixed on God and our actions are fixed on Christ, we can then look to those around us. We may not all rule kingdoms, but we all have areas of influence we’re responsible for. Areas we can bring into heavenly alignment by putting Christ at the centre.

As this Bible plan comes to a close, my prayer is that you’ll be able to dwell on the questions posed, and as you examine where you need to realign your life to have Jesus at the centre of your heart, your actions and your ‘rule’, that you would discover a new, lighter way to live, free within the boundless love of Christ to trust and follow him wholeheartedly.

Questions:

  1. In 1 Kings 3:5-14, Solomon asks for wisdom to govern God's people effectively. How does Solomon's request exemplify putting God first in his leadership role? How can Solomon's choice serve as a model for us in our roles and responsibilities?
  2. According to this passage, how does prioritising God's wisdom and seeking His guidance affect not only the individual making the choice (Solomon in this case) but also the broader community or those under their leadership?
  3. How can we practically apply the principle of putting God first to benefit and bless those under our care or responsibility? Write down how prioritising God's wisdom and seeking His guidance can positively influence relationships, leadership, or stewardship roles. What are the next steps to ensure our leadership blesses others?
Day 2

About this Plan

First Things First

Join us on a challenging 3-day journey of self-reflection and soul re-alignment as we look at what it means to put First Things First and have God at the centre of all we think and do. We’ll look at why God should be our first priority and the Bible should be our first port of call for wisdom.
