This Easter Week....The Crown That Speaks

DAY 3 OF 7

THE PURPLE ROBE & HELMET

“And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head and put a purple robe on Him.” John 19:2

Robes in the Bible were significant and had great meaning. We read of the Robes of Righteousness, the Garment of Salvation, and the robe Jesus wore during His torture. Matthew called the robe scarlet, and Mark and John called it purple; so, was it scarlet or purple? It doesn’t matter because I have people who can’t distinguish true colors in my life, and I’m sure you do, too! Not everyone has artistic eyes.

What matters is that with the crown of thorns, there was a robe. Kings and royalty wear robes, purple is a color of royalty, and scarlet represents blood.

The crown of thorns, the scepter, and the robe were all ways the Roman Soldiers chose to mock Jesus because He claimed to be the King of the Jews. These items were meant to minimize, belittle, and humiliate our Savior.

His death and resurrection are so sacred and loving because He took the weight of our sins in exchange. Because of His willing sacrifice, He offers us a cloak of salvation! Let us ponder the words in Isaiah 59:7.

“He put on righteousness as his body armor and placed the helmet of salvation on his head. He clothed himself with a robe of vengeance and wrapped himself in a cloak of divine passion.” Isaiah 59:7 NLT.

What a connection between the crown of thorns and the helmet of salvation we are told to put on in Ephesians 17! Jesus wore suffering on His head for our helmet of salvation! I don’t know about you, but that gives me goosebumps! And the robe He was clothed in was filled with the Romans' vengeance; he wrapped it with passion so we could be wrapped in the cloak of salvation! Halleluiah!

EASTER TAKEAWAY: There was a connection for us between that crown and robe to the ones He wears for us!

PRAYER: Lord God, I thank You for the revelation between the thorns He took on for us so we can be donned with robes of righteousness and a crown to cast at His feet! In Jesus’ Name. Amen
