Easter Devotional Plan: The Final Hours of Jesus

DAY 6 OF 7

The Final Words - Part 3

In the sixth day of the stations of the cross, we are completing our contemplation of the final words of Jesus Christ. The next two sayings of Jesus speak to us of his trust in the plan and care of his Father.

THE SIXTH WORD: John 19:30

"It is finished!”

THE SEVENTH WORD: Luke 23:46

"Father, into your hands I commend my spirit."

As Jesus uttered, “It is finished!” he wasn’t referring to his own personal pain and suffering finishing on the cross. Rather, he was referring to God’s means of salvation, God’s redemptive plan, through his suffering on the cross. It was the bigger picture and mission of God that Jesus had on his mind, even at the very end of his physical life. At this point, all that most of us would be able to think about is the end of our personal pain and torment. Our ability to think about the kingdom of God and his plans would fade away into the background. Yet, Christ knows this was God’s will and trusts God’s wisdom and providence.

As he knows that he has fulfilled his purpose in this world, he is able to release his spirit and not fight and rail against the end of his human life. He is able to let go and embrace eternity.

As we prepare for Easter, we need to remember Jesus’ words before giving up his spirit. Even when we cannot see the end or understand the reason, are we willing to trust in God’s goodness and plan of redemption? Are we willing to let go of our own plans, vision, and even life to accomplish his greater purposes?

Let us pick up our cross and follow him.
