We’re all pretty good at complaining. “Why can’t I ride shotgun?” “I’m hungry!” “I need money!” “My parent never lets me do anything!” “Why do I have to do my homework?” An amazing fact of behavioral science is that we all have what is called a negativity bias. This means we have more brain space reserved for negative emotions than we have for positive emotions. And yet research also shows that nearly half of our experiences involving joy and happiness come from intentional activity.
So, rather than being good at complaining, this verse encourages Jesus’ followers to instead choose gratitude. Of course, this doesn’t come easy for any of us due to our negativity bias. So, you might need a little help.
Ask an adult at your house to call you out each time you complain, and to help you instead find something to be thankful for in the moment. It might be difficult at first, but the result—a more thankful heart—will be worth it!
