Liturgies for Wholeness

DAY 1 OF 5

A LITURGY FOR OVERTHINKING

A note as you begin: As you read each day’s liturgy, take a deep breath. Read each line slowly. Speak directly to God and resolve to be fully honest with Him. Listen quietly for the Father’s encouraging response. Spend additional time with the Scripture verses at the end of these prayers and ask what the Holy Spirit may be speaking to you through His Word.

As you read and pray, may God remind you that He is kind, gracious, beautiful, and good. May you sense, deep in your soul, that He longs to hear from you, no matter how fractured you may feel. If the pursuit of wholeness begins with brokenness, then may we come to the feet of Jesus together, looking beyond ourselves to the only One who can make us whole.

Oh God who speaks calm into chaos,

who orders disorder,

who rules over unruliness—

my mind is caught in a spiral,

utterly lost to the anarchy of intrusive thoughts.

I have played out every possible scenario in my head,

running through the what-ifs and how-comes,

believing if I think long or hard enough,

I will somehow bring myself clarity.

I have tried and failed to steady myself with solutions,

to shelter myself with willpower,

seeking asylum in logical theories,

only for the tantalizing promise of security to vanish like smoke.

But all of this thinking has left me lost at sea

and no closer to meaningful answers.

My thoughts have spread themselves thin,

and I hardly have any strength left.

So I bring my exhausted mind to You

and invite You into this space of confusion.

When my thoughts wander,

redirect them to Your steadying presence.

When my mind sets off on a path leading nowhere,

guide me back to Your side.

When I cannot be still,

soothe the turbulence within me

the same way You calmed the wind and waves.

May I entrust all I do not know

and all I cannot grasp to You.

Help me comprehend what is meant for me in due time.

As I place my absolute faith in You,

may I be met by my whole self,

made full and complete in Christ—

not boasting in my own understanding

but surrendered in humble confidence

to the One who fathoms all that I cannot.

Amen.
