The Comfort of the Psalms in the Battles of LifeSample
The beauty of the Lord
“One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple.” (Psalm 27:4)
One of the reasons we might feel uncomfortable about the 'beauty of God' is that we often limit beauty to external appearance. The Bible does not do that. In 1 Peter 3:3-4, Peter urges women: “Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, wearing gold jewelry, or putting on fine apparel. Instead, it should be the inner disposition of the heart, consisting in the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.”
Beauty is also found within, and this applies to the Lord God as well. His beauty consists of His wisdom, strength, righteousness, and love.
Moreover, the beauty of God is revealed in His Son, our Lord Jesus. This beauty is not about external appearance either. In Isaiah 53, it says: “He had no beauty that we should desire Him.” Yet the Bible states about the Messiah: “Your eyes will behold the king in His beauty” (Isaiah 33:17) and “You are the most handsome of the sons of men” (Psalm 45:2). Jesus is beautiful because in Him, we see the glory of the Lord God.
“What a beautiful person” can never be said with more justification than about the Lord Jesus. He is so good, loving, gracious, patient, attentive to everyone, compassionate, serving, forgiving, gentle, humble, persevering, and devoted. What a beautiful person! Do you adore Him?
