Walking in Wisdom Pt. 1Sample

Walking in Wisdom Pt. 1

DAY 2 OF 5

What Is Wisdom?

Today, we explore the critical question raised by Ephesians: What is wisdom? This inquiry is vital as we strive to walk wisely, for without a clear understanding of wisdom, we cannot fully grasp what such a walk entails. Scripture frequently mentions wisdom, underscoring its value. The Old and New Testaments hold it in high esteem, differentiating God’s wisdom from worldly wisdom.

The pursuit of wisdom has long been a subject of interest. Philosophers have sought wisdom, yet the wisdom of God is distinct and often in opposition to the world’s wisdom. 1 Corinthians 1:19-20 speaks powerfully to this, revealing God’s intention to nullify the wisdom of the wise, showcasing the insufficiency of worldly intelligence in understanding divine truths.

To begin with, understanding God’s wisdom requires knowledge. This knowledge is not built on falsehoods or mere human perceptions; it is rooted in the truth of salvation and enlightenment from God. As believers, we’re contrasted with those lacking this knowledge. This is evident in scriptures like Proverbs 1:3, which speaks of receiving instruction in wise behavior, and Proverbs 1:5-6, which highlights the importance of acquiring wise counsel and understanding proverbs and figures.

However, possessing knowledge alone does not equate to wisdom. You can be knowledgeable and yet not live wisely. Wisdom is the application of knowledge in everyday life. It’s knowing how the truths of God apply in specific situations, and how Scripture aligns with our daily experiences. As Proverbs 8:33 advises, we must heed instruction and be wise.

The essence of wisdom is living out your doctrine, not separating belief from practice. In our world, there’s often a disconnect between what we profess and how we live. True wisdom bridges this gap, integrating our understanding of God’s word with our actions and decisions. This integration is at the heart of wisdom—it’s not just knowing the truth but applying it in all aspects of life.

Walking in wisdom is not solely a matter of human effort; it is a product of the Holy Spirit’s activity. Wisdom flourishes in an environment of humility and reverence for the Lord. Proverbs 15:33 encapsulates this beautifully: “The fear of the Lord is the instruction for wisdom, and before honor comes humility.” Knowledge can exist without humility, but wisdom cannot.

Have you been pursuing wisdom? Or maybe it is better to ask, have you been pursuing the Lord’s wisdom? Ask God to show you where you haven’t been living out your doctrine. If you feel you have been living out your doctrine and still find yourself foolish, maybe you should search the Scriptures to see if your beliefs are the problem. Whichever it is, the Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth.
