Songs of the Soul: A Lent Devotional

DAY 19 OF 40

Have you ever walked along the ocean's shore at midnight and seen the waves aglow?

Tiny plankton lighting up the water like blue fire from a sci-fi movie. Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by certain unique living organisms, like jellyfish, lanternfish, certain sharks, and even fireflies.

What if we're bioluminescent too? Glowing our brightest in the dark.

There's an immeasurable, but immense benefit in the dark seasons of our lives. The seasons where we can't seem to see the path in front of us, where prayers go seemingly unanswered, where suffering is our song, where the only thing familiar to us is our own trembling shadow. It's in these seasons that God has a tendency to call out of us sparks of light, almost like holy chemical reactions, that require darkness to ignite.

Why? Because He seems to know that some things can only bloom bright at night.

If you are going through a season where you feel God has hidden Himself from you, where you feel like a soloist in what should feel like a symphony, where darkness seems to be prevailing — remember that God created both light and darkness and His Love for you and His Good and Purposeful Plans for your life, remain constant and unwavering in both luminations.

Here's what happens in the dark:

1) Our pace slows
2) Surroundings become meaningless
3) Everything quiets
4) We hear better
5) The Spirit whispers
6) We desperately listen
7) We believe what's said
8) We obey
9) We take on the Characteristics of the Whispering Spirit
10) We become light in the darkness...

...just like Jesus.

Prayer:
Dear God, I am so grateful that You are unwavering. Whether under the brightest sun, or the blackest night, You never change, Your Love for me is constant and I can trust in Your Plans for my life. May I learn to listen to Your Voice when I can't see the path in front of me, knowing that You will always lead me to higher places. Amen.
