Quality Time
I was thinking about a usual day for me, conversations with my wife, talking about the day, the children, the various jobs around the house we have to do. I started to compile all these short interactions together and realised that even when compiled together, and asked my wife that evening if the sum total of my calculations equalled us having quality time… She was quick to make it clear to me that my offering really wasn’t quality time.
That uninterrupted time, the focused attention and interest. The conversation, relationship-building stuff that a relationship really needs.
I would always say I was a 100 mini prayers a day sort of bloke, but the truth is, I know this isn’t quality time with Jesus. I know I have better to give him.
"Yet He frequently withdrew to the wilderness to pray.
But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray."
Luke 5:16
I love this, Jesus modelled the rhythm, the pattern or blueprint to build, nurture and maintain and close relationship with his father.
But it is more than just time, it is your best time!
This is where we start to step into some of that cost of following Jesus.
He wants time with you, but I think he wants your quality time.
You may not be a morning person, so give him time in the evening.
You may not be an evening person, so give him the early hour.
I started to say ‘I am just so busy, I haven’t got the time!’
My phone has this terrible thing installed that messages me each week with what’s called ‘screen time.’ I can't hide from it. It shows me exactly how I use my ‘best time.’
Devotional Prayer
My challenge today, is find out what your best time is, and give it to Jesus. Talk to him. Seek him. See what he does.
Give him the time that you are most awake!
Tomorrow I will just give a few practical ways to keep the momentum going in seeking Jesus.
