DAY 1 OF 8

RESET 1

“Stop fighting, and know that I am God, exalted among the nations, exalted on the earth.” —Psalm 46:10

How many of you are worn out and weary from the fight? There’s the fight for space in the gym, the fight to get players into the right position to win, and the fight for attendance at summer workouts. There are the more ominous battles: the fights that break out over dinner in the throes of a five-game losing streak, the Facebook post from the parent who not only doesn’t like your offense but also wants you fired! We live in a world marked by striving, scrapping, and fighting.

However, the Father extends this beautiful invitation: stop fighting, stop striving, and be quiet. In the stopping and ceasing we recognize true reality: He is God, and in worshipping and exalting Him, we get a major reset!!

Key Scripture: Luke 5:1–11

Simon Peter is a man used to the grind. He works hard as a simple fisherman on the Sea of Galilee. While he suffers under the economic, political, and religious oppression of the Roman government, he also knows the Scriptures: one day, Yahweh will send His Messiah to fight for His people and free them from bondage. Every Saturday at synagogue, he is reminded of the prophetic reading of what God has promised.

One morning, as Peter and his associates finished a hard but fruitless night of fishing, a young rabbi from Nazareth with a growing reputation showed up and commandeered Peter’s boat for a makeshift amphitheater. When Jesus asks Peter to go out to sea and cast the nets once more, Peter reluctantly but respectfully obeys.

When Peter recognizes the miraculous nature of the catch, he has a major reset: this young rabbi is no ordinary teacher. Peter has known respectable and godly teachers, but in Jesus, he recognizes a divine authority that surpasses anything he’s accustomed to. Notice Peter’s immediate posture: he falls to his knees, the posture of submission, worship, and exaltation. Jesus then extends an invitation for a new vocation: fishing for people.

  • What was Peter’s initial response to Jesus’ miracle? Why do you think Peter felt this way?
  • Imagine the scene where Peter, James, and John park their boats to follow Jesus. What do you think their friends and family felt about this decision?

Coaching is a joyful but grueling vocation. We battle the internal struggles of pride and the temptation to find our identity in performance and in the win-loss record, and we also battle the external pressures of parents, administrators, and fans. Maybe it’s time for a reset.

  • Be Still: The fight isn’t ours; it’s the Lord's. Confidently yield the battle, the worry, the anxiety, and the fear to Him. — Exodus 14:14
  • Be Open: We need a revelation like Peter received. We need to be reminded of who we are in light of who we are. In Christ, we are loved, chosen, cared for, and promised a glorious future. Walk in the freedom that comes from realizing the certain hope we have from the Father through Jesus. —Ephesians 1:17-18

About this Plan

24/7 Coaches

The 24/7 Coaches plan is designed to help coaches go from overwhelmed to overflowing by teaching through the life of Peter. We walk through four themes in this study, Reset, Renew, Refuel and Ready. We need a new perspective on winning. We need to redefine our priorities. We need to take back our time and fill it with the presence of Jesus.
