Navigating the Mysteries of Faith

DAY 1 OF 5

Faith Arrives

As believers, we may struggle with faith throughout our lives, but have you ever wondered what faith is and how you can increase it?

Faith often seems ephemeral, like something without substance. It is frequently difficult to explain, but the Bible explains it well: faith is trust. The only way to increase our faith is by hearing and believing in God’s Word and the message of Christ.

We cannot gain faith through specific circumstances, temporal measures, or through the world around us—what we can see and touch. Humans waste a lot of time trying to grow their faith by manipulating or controlling circumstances. That is not how faith works.

We gain faith by listening. Faith is not proof; it is trust.

We cannot trust someone we do not know, so it is essential to know God. We learn about Him and what He has to say to us through the Scriptures, from teachings in church, from our community, from observing how nature works, and so on. When we believe His Word to be true, then we can trust God and tune our hearts to hear His voice. Faith is trusting in God. It is not leaning on our understanding alone.

When we listen to the voice of God and believe it, we open ourselves to more faith. We expose ourselves to the Source of faith: the Author and Perfecter of faith. Listening to God is how faith arrives, how it proves its worth, and how we grow in it.

Jesus said that if we had faith the size of a mustard seed, we could see wonderful things happen. However, we also find examples of many heroes of faith who died without seeing what God promised them. Therefore, our faith cannot be based solely on what we see, for there are things that our natural eyes do not see but are prepared for those who love God.

Lord, I yearn to listen to Your guidance. Our world is guided by what it sees and touches, and it is temporary. I need Your direction to rise higher, to attain the eternal. Please, open my ears to hear what You have to say, and my eyes to see You clearly in the Scriptures. Help me to push my perspective to the back seat and allow faith to grow, increase, and bear fruit so that You may be recognized through me.
