5 Days of Comfort: Count Your Blessings and Stop Stressing

DAY 5 OF 5

The Shadow

One of the most comforting word pictures in the Psalms is that of the believer being protected under God’s wings—in their shadow. Can you imagine a more secure or cozier place to be than under the wings of God, like a baby bird under its mother’s wings? It gives a sense of warmth, protection, and care. Shadows can be a negative thing, but in this case, it is a good shadow. It’s like protection that you can’t feel but that hovers above you nevertheless wherever you walk. Have you ever walked along under the eaves of a row of shops on a rainy day? The rain is pouring elsewhere, but under the shadow of the overhang, you’re dry. In the same way, under God’s shadow, you’re secure.

Every aspect of your life is under God’s protecting shadow. This security brings joy and rest. We often worry about the what-ifs and what will happen to ourselves or those we love. But this verse reminds us that all these things are under God’s care. He is protective of us. We are hidden in him.

Prayer: Father, keep me in the shadow of your wings.
