On Purpose: A Lent Devotional Journey

DAY 33 OF 40

Day 33 | The whole-life gospel

Reflection

When Jesus is asked to summarise the purpose of the Mosaic law, his application is arresting – ‘love God and love your neighbours.’

But like the lawyer who presents the trick question, we always want to know the limits of any law. How much do I have to give? How many times should I forgive? His question has that feel about it. How far does this neighbourly love extend?

When Jeremiah was helping God’s people understand their purpose whilst living in a strange land as exiles, he described the breadth of this neighbour's love: ‘Work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare.’ (Jeremiah 29:7 NLT).

God was saying to them: these are your neighbours, these people that you might see as your very enemies – love them and give your life for their shalom!

During Holy Week, we’ll remember Jesus’ journey to the cross to lay down his life in love. He doesn’t just do this for his closest friends. He lays down his life even for his enemies.

This is the whole-life gospel. It’s good news for everyone – and that includes the neighbours you struggle to love. What an incredible purpose to live for.

Father, forgive me when I pick and choose which neighbours to love. Help me to show my love for you by the way I love each person I interact with. Amen.
