 <div class="p">29As the crowds increased, Jesus said, &#8220;This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. 30For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon&#8217;s wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here. 32The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and now something greater than Jonah is here.</div><div class="s1">The Lamp of the Body</div><div class="p"> 33 &#8220;No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. 34Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy,#11:34 The Greek for healthy here implies generous. your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy,#11:34 The Greek for unhealthy here implies stingy. your body also is full of darkness. 35See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Woes on the Pharisees and the Experts in the Law</div><div class="p"> 37When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. 38But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.</div><div class="p"> 39Then the Lord said to him, &#8220;Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41But now as for what is inside you&#8212;be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.</div><div class="p"> 42 &#8220;Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.</div><div class="p"> 43 &#8220;Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.</div><div class="p"> 44 &#8220;Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which people walk over without knowing it.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 45One of the experts in the law answered him, &#8220;Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 46Jesus replied, &#8220;And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.</div><div class="p"> 47 &#8220;Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. 49Because of this, God in his wisdom said, &#8216;I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.&#8217; 50Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.</div><div class="p"> 52 &#8220;Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 53When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54waiting to catch him in something he might say.</div>

 <div class="p">1Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: &#8220;Be#12:1 Or speak to his disciples, saying: &#8220;First of all, be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 3What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.</div><div class="p"> 4 &#8220;I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. 6Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don&#8217;t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.</div><div class="p"> 8 &#8220;I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. 9But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God. 10And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.</div><div class="p"> 11 &#8220;When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, 12for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Parable of the Rich Fool</div><div class="p"> 13Someone in the crowd said to him, &#8220;Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 14Jesus replied, &#8220;Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?&#8221; 15Then he said to them, &#8220;Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 16And he told them this parable: &#8220;The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17He thought to himself, &#8216;What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.&#8217;</div><div class="p"> </div>
