The Founding Fathers & The Bible

DAY 5 OF 5

John Jay

In 1776, John Jay gave a moving address urging colonists to strive for independence, rather than wishing for the rule of the king. He referenced an episode in the book of Exodus, when the Israelites desired to return to Egypt rather than continue their exodus out of slavery. "Cease, then, to desire the flesh-pots of Egypt, and remember their taskmasters and oppressions. No longer hesitate about rejecting all dependence on a king who will rule you only with a rod of iron."

About this Plan

The Founding Fathers & The Bible

As we celebrate the Fourth of July with parades, fireworks, and red, white, and blue, we remember the contributions all those who advocated and fought for American independence. Join Museum of the Bible as we explore biblical references in the writings and speeches of five of our most influential Founding Fathers: George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Jay.
