Milestones - Salvation, Baptism, Communion

DAY 14 OF 15

When something is symbolic, it means it’s not the actual thing, but when we see the symbol, it has meaning to us. We use symbols all the time to communicate important things. An exclamation mark in a triangle is a symbol for a ‘warning,’ an Easter Egg is a symbol of new life, and a light bulb above your head is a symbol for a great idea!

Jesus used the bread and the cup as a symbol for His body and His blood. Bread and wine would be a normal part of meals shared in Bible times, even more so at the Passover meal. Jesus gave new meaning to these two items, becoming symbols for people to remember Him. Jesus wanted them to remember Him often and the bread and cup of wine are part of regular life.

When we take communion, we are remembering that Jesus died on the cross and rose again for us. He saved us from sin and through Him we receive forgiveness.Communion reminds us that our debt is paid, and nothing separates us from God.

We usually take communion together at church, it might look different in different churches but usually each person is given a small cup of red grape juice and a small piece of bread, wafer or small cracker. There might be a worship song played that reminds us of Jesus on the cross and the pastor or leader will explain what the bread and cup represent and invite everyone to spend a moment thinking about what Jesus has done for them and thanking Him.
