Truth Pursuer: Fight the LiesSample
Scene 2: You’re in your best friend’s room. She’s flopped on the floor. You’re stretched across the bed. You’re both paging through magazines. Your friend is looking at a fashion spread when she suddenly stands up and goes to check herself in the mirror. “Ugh!” she says. “My clothes are so ugly! If I just had the outfits in that magazine, maybe I would have more friends.”
The Lie
Did you catch it? Your friend believes her appearance makes her who she is and determines how popular she’ll be. It’s a lie that culture spews all the time.
The Truth
The truth is your inner character is so much more important than what’s on the outside. God’s Word says, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). Also, 1 Peter 3:3-5 reminds girls that beauty shouldn’t be based on how you fix your hair or what kind of jewelry you wear but on your beautiful spirit.
Know It, Do It
So what should you do now that you know the truth? First, work just as hard at growing a beautiful spirit as you do at picking your clothes and doing your hair. Also, it’s super important to have friends who remind you where true beauty comes from.

About this Plan
Your culture is the environment you live in every day. It’s the TV you watch, the advertisements you see, the music you listen to and the Web sites you visit. It’s the way people dress, talk and act around you. Culture is so much a part of your life that you often don’t even notice it. You just accept it without thinking. And that would be OK, except for one thing: Your culture lies to you. Did you know that every day, little (and big!) lies slip into your mind and heart? Don’t believe it? Let’s put culture under the magnifying glass and discover those lies. Copyright (c) Lindy Keffer, Focus on the Family.
