Being Humble in a Braggadocious World
- Pastor Matt Markarian
“Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” – Matthew 20:26 (NIV)
In a world that often exalts power, success, and authority, Jesus offers a radical perspective on greatness. His teachings challenge the conventional norms by emphasizing the heart of servanthood. In Matthew 20:26, Jesus makes a profound statement: greatness in the kingdom of God isn't achieved through dominance or control or the number of followers you have on social media but through serving others.
Jesus' life exemplified servant leadership. He, the Son of God, humbly washed His disciples' feet, setting an example of selfless service. His entire ministry was marked by compassion, healing, and meeting the needs of those around Him. He didn't seek titles or recognition but embraced humility and servitude.
In today's culture, recognition and prominence can be tempting. However, Jesus challenges us to adopt a different mindset. He invites us to prioritize serving others over seeking personal gain. According to Jesus, true greatness emerges when we humbly serve without expecting anything in return. As you go about your day, look for ways to serve those around you with love and humility.
Make a Difference:
As we reflect today, let’s consider:
How does Jesus' concept of greatness as servanthood contrast with the world's definition of success and power?
In what practical ways can we embody the spirit of servanthood in our daily lives, whether at work, at home, or in our communities?
Why is humility an essential component of authentic servanthood, and how can we cultivate a humble heart in a culture that often esteems self-promotion?
What unfinished business is getting in the way of you humbly following Jesus?
As You Read:
As Solomon becomes king, humility is his watchword. God blesses him richly because of his humility. As you’ll see, it doesn’t last, and the nation suffers. But Jesus shows us that humility doesn’t ever truly stop; it always looks for the next way to serve.
