Beyond Belief

DAY 2 OF 5

Before we begin, we want to know what we refer to when we use the terms “belief” and “faith.” The Bible gives us a clear and concise definition of faith:

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

According to the Bible, faith is being thoroughly convinced of, placing all our trust in, resting securely on, and depending solely upon someone or something despite not having seen concrete evidence in person.

As Christians, we place our trust and rest upon Jesus Christ as the Son of God and the foundation of our faith. Jesus is the Lamb of God who has taken away all our sins. We firmly believe that the Bible is God's true and infallible Word. We also believe that God is the creator of the heavens and the earth and rewards those who have faith in Him.

Belief can also refer to an intellectual acknowledgment of and assent to facts only. For example, James says in his letter, “Some will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!”

Saving faith in Jesus is more than mere intellectual assent; it is belief displayed through repentance, relationship, and action. True faith is demonstrated by turning from our old ways and turning to God and serving Jesus as our Lord and King. When we understand that Jesus bore our sin, took our place when we stood condemned, suffered God's wrath, and endured the eternal penalty we deserved, we desire to live for Jesus and serve Him only.

Where does this belief come from? Is this something we come up with on our own, according to Ephesians 1?

Take a moment to reflect upon this passage. Close in prayer.
