 <div class="p">29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, &#8220;Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is the one I meant when I said, &#8216;A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.&#8217; 31I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 32Then John gave this testimony: &#8220;I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, &#8216;The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.&#8217; 34I have seen and I testify that this is God&#8217;s Chosen One.&#8221;#1:34 See Isaiah 42:1; many manuscripts is the Son of God.</div><div class="s1">John&#8217;s Disciples Follow Jesus</div><div class="p"> 35The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, &#8220;Look, the Lamb of God!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 37When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, &#8220;What do you want?&#8221;</div><div class="p">They said, &#8220;Rabbi&#8221; (which means &#8220;Teacher&#8221;), &#8220;where are you staying?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 39 &#8220;Come,&#8221; he replied, &#8220;and you will see.&#8221;</div><div class="p">So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.</div><div class="p"> 40Andrew, Simon Peter&#8217;s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, &#8220;We have found the Messiah&#8221; (that is, the Christ). 42And he brought him to Jesus.</div><div class="p">Jesus looked at him and said, &#8220;You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas&#8221; (which, when translated, is Peter#1:42 Cephas (Aramaic) and Peter (Greek) both mean rock.).</div><div class="s1">Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael</div><div class="p"> 43The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, &#8220;Follow me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 44Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45Philip found Nathanael and told him, &#8220;We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote&#8212;Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 46&#8220;Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?&#8221; Nathanael asked.</div><div class="p">&#8220;Come and see,&#8221; said Philip.</div><div class="p"> 47When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, &#8220;Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 48&#8220;How do you know me?&#8221; Nathanael asked.</div><div class="p">Jesus answered, &#8220;I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 49Then Nathanael declared, &#8220;Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 50Jesus said, &#8220;You believe#1:50 Or Do you believe&#8230;? because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.&#8221; 51He then added, &#8220;Very truly I tell you,#1:51 The Greek is plural. you#1:51 The Greek is plural. will see &#8216;heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on&#8217;#1:51 Gen. 28:12 the Son of Man.&#8221;</div>

 <div class="p">12When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali&#8212; 14to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:</div><div class="q1"> 15&#8220;Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,</div><div class="q2">the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,</div><div class="q2">Galilee of the Gentiles&#8212;</div><div class="q1"> 16the people living in darkness</div><div class="q2">have seen a great light;</div><div class="q1">on those living in the land of the shadow of death</div><div class="q2">a light has dawned.&#8221;#4:16 Isaiah 9:1,2</div><div class="p"> 17From that time on Jesus began to preach, &#8220;Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Calls His First Disciples</div><div class="p"> 18As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19&#8220;Come, follow me,&#8221; Jesus said, &#8220;and I will send you out to fish for people.&#8221; 20At once they left their nets and followed him.</div><div class="p"> 21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals the Sick</div><div class="p"> 23Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them. 25Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,#4:25 That is, the Ten Cities Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.</div>

He stood up to read, 17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:</div><div class="q1"> 18 &#8220;The Spirit of the Lord is on me,</div><div class="q2"> because he has anointed me</div><div class="q2"> to proclaim good news to the poor.</div><div class="q1"> He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners</div><div class="q2"> and recovery of sight for the blind,</div><div class="q1"> to set the oppressed free,</div><div class="q2"> 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord&#8217;s favor.&#8221; # 4:19 
 Isaiah 61:1,2 (see Septuagint); Isaiah 58:6 </div><div class="p"> 20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21He began by saying to them, &#8220;Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. &#8220;Isn&#8217;t this Joseph&#8217;s son?&#8221; they asked.</div><div class="p"> 23Jesus said to them, &#8220;Surely you will quote this proverb to me: &#8216;Physician, heal yourself!&#8217; And you will tell me, &#8216;Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 24 &#8220;Truly I tell you,&#8221; he continued, &#8220;no prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah&#8217;s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. 26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. 27And there were many in Israel with leprosy#4:27 The Greek word traditionally translated leprosy was used for various diseases affecting the skin. in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed&#8212;only Naaman the Syrian.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 28All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit</div><div class="p"> 31Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.</div><div class="p"> 33In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34&#8220;Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are&#8212;the Holy One of God!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 35 &#8220;Be quiet!&#8221; Jesus said sternly. &#8220;Come out of him!&#8221; Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.</div><div class="p"> 36All the people were amazed and said to each other, &#8220;What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!&#8221; 37And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals Many</div><div class="p"> 38Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon&#8217;s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.</div><div class="p"> 40At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. 41Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, &#8220;You are the Son of God!&#8221; But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.</div><div class="p"> 42At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43But he said, &#8220;I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.&#8221; 44And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.</div>

Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.</div><div class="p"> 4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, &#8220;Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 5Simon answered, &#8220;Master, we&#8217;ve worked hard all night and haven&#8217;t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 6When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.</div><div class="p"> 8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus&#8217; knees and said, &#8220;Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!&#8221; 9For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon&#8217;s partners.</div><div class="p">Then Jesus said to Simon, &#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.&#8221; 11So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.</div>
