We can sometimes get lost in the activity of temple sacrifice when reading about it. Why do we have to talk about blood so much? Why does it seem so violent? What's happening? But there's so much rich meaning in these sacrifices. For example: God says that the person offering the sacrifice puts his hands on the animal's head so that it can count as a substitute for him. There's more at play than just an action; something spiritual was at work here.
There was an animal you could see, you could touch, you could smell. It was there. Nothing about that changed when the person offering it put their hands on its head. Your eye wouldn't catch anything different. And yet, God says spiritually that animals now become a substitute. It now took the judgment the person offering it deserved. Offering and sacrifice are about so much more than actions! There's a whole spiritual weight behind it all.
Think it Over: How does placing hands on the animal to be your substitute sound like putting our faith in Jesus?
