Eucharist: On the Bittersweet, Death, and Hope

At the last supper, Jesus broke the bread and passed the cup and told His friends never to forget the moment and all it represented. He knew they were going to need the reminder later. What was about to happen was going to shake everything they thought they knew about God. And He knew we’d all need it even today.

It was a bittersweet moment.

The hours that followed Jesus last meal must have been terribly confusing to Jesus friends.  The victory they had anticipated was lost in the ashes of defeat.  The one they had put their trust in was dead.  And after the Resurrection nothing could ever be the way it once was.

After Jesus returned to the Father, the disciples were instructed to wait.  And in that waiting they must have wondered what we all do at times—“What am I supposed to do now?”

Thankfully Jesus told them, “Do this in remembrance of me.”  The Eucharist, or communion or the Lord’s Table or whatever you call it in your tradition is a reminder.  It is the opportunity to gather our broken hearts in community and re-tell the story.  A story that reminds us who we are, how we got here and that we will never be abandoned.  Jesus is with us always.  He is in our hearts.  The divine is wrapped in humanity as it was always supposed to be.  We cannot be separated from the love of God because it is within us and a part of us.  And this, my friends is the Good News we must share. 

Be conscious that you are sneezing something everywhere you go.

Take back your heart and give it hopelessly to God. Take back your family and love without ceasing.

May you become so infected with the resurrection power of Jesus that it is impossible to find yourself outside of Him.

Extraordinary is supposed to be ordinary. Supernatural is supposed to be natural. The divine is within the human. 

With God we are truly human—and the possibilities are limitless.
