This begins Jesus’ longest recorded teaching. It establishes a level of righteousness that seems beyond anyone’s capability. The Pharisees worked the hardest at obeying God’s law, but Jesus said people had to do better than that.

The crazy thing is that the Pharisees actually believed they could live up to God’s standard. Jesus lets them know they cannot. The righteousness Jesus is requiring can only come to us by faith in Jesus.
