A Very Special Child, Isaiah's Prophecy About the Lord JesusSample
The Light is a person
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12)
Light was created by God. In fact, when He formed and filled the earth, light was the first thing He made. So it is not surprising that the Bible describes God as the ultimate source of light. His presence illuminates the darkness of our lives. In 1 John 1:5, we even read that God is light.
Isaiah speaks of “a great light” in connection with “a Child” being born. The birth of this Child will lead to deliverance and joy. When centuries later the Lord Jesus is born, He is recognized by Simeon as the promised light. Jesus is then only a baby. There is nothing outwardly special about Him. But the Holy Spirit makes it clear to Simeon that this baby is the fulfillment of Isaiah's words. He is “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” Somehow this baby will bring joy and salvation not only to Israel but also to other nations.
As the Lord Jesus reaches maturity, He Himself affirms. “I am the light of the world,” He says. For He is God and man at the same time. Whoever follows Him will always have the light of life.
Do you also associate God with light? Why, or why not?
About this Plan
The Bible tells a lot about the Lord Jesus. There are four Bible books devoted to His life, and later letters often describe Him as well. But even before the Lord Jesus was born, prophets wrote about Him. This reading plan is about a prophecy by Isaiah that tells us how special Jesus is.
