Raising Hope

DAY 2 OF 4

Give Of Yourself...

Do you like police shows? You know those stories that follow the lives of men and women in blue, solving cases and catching bad guys. Most men love them.

In a sense, this appeals to our masculine nature because the police are tasked to serve and protect. As men, we are also called to serve and protect our homes, our friends, and our faith. And Joseph of Nazareth was no different than us.

Awakened by an angel, Joseph gets wind of a plot to kill his adopted Son. But he’s not gonna let that happen. No, he is there to protect and serve the future King. And since he already got over himself, it’s not too difficult to also give of himself now…

Now not many of our situations will be as drastic as being called up by an angel and fleeing through the desert night to set up shop next to pyramids. But as men, we are likewise called to give of ourselves every day, especially through the usual motions and mundane tasks. Doing the usual things with excellence and consistency eventually sets us apart as unusual men. Doing this takes character in the unseen, boldness behind the scenes, and sacrifice in the stillness of our being.

This is seen when we work hard, but we’re on time for dinners and help with the dishes. It’s in the comforting hug from a father who himself has hurt and uncertainties. It’s when you put down the remote control and pick up God’s Word. It's when you take the call and avail yourself to a friend in need.

To protect and serve in a big way, start by giving of yourself in all the small ways…
